thyssenkrupp Steel: Renovation and modernization work at the Duisburg location enters the decisive phase

Duisburg, July 5, 2024 – The work to renew and modernize the central production units at the Duisburg thyssenkrupp Steel location is entering the home straight. In addition to the renewal of the continuous casting line in Bruckhausen, this primarily includes the separation of the casting rolling line. The unit plays a key role in supplying the downstream units of the production network. However, the casting rolling line was commissioned more than 25 years ago, and it is no longer capable of meeting future customer quality requirements. For this reason, we are now taking the step of converting the unit into a continuous casting line with a modern hot strip mill downstream. thyssenkrupp Steel already emphasized that despite the planned structural realignment of the steel business, the measures under the previous strategy program remain strategically necessary and will be implemented. The total investment for all projects is in the high three-digit million range.

Shutdown of the casting rolling mill in November 2024 – ramp-up of the new systems from May 2025

The preparatory excavation and foundation works for the major project have largely been completed, and the pre-assembly of various plant components has already begun. In mid-November 2024, the existing casting rolling mill in Bruckhausen will be shut down and partially dismantled to make room for the new plant components. The new continuous casting line and the modernized hot strip mill will then go into operation and ramp-up from mid-May 2025.

By optimizing its production network, thyssenkrupp Steel is continuing to focus its product portfolio systematically on future markets and profitable premium products. These include multiphase steels and lightweight steels, as well as grades with high surface quality. It will also reinforce the production of high-quality electrical steel grades, which are essential for the energy and mobility revolution.
