Our industrial concept

thyssenkrupp Steel is realigning itself for the future. Our strategy has now matured into a comprehensive industrial concept – an ambitious plan that charts the path from a long-established steel company to a sustainable industrial enterprise.

At the heart of this concept lies a twofold conviction: high-quality steel remains indispensable for industrial value creation. And that is precisely why its production must become environmentally sustainable.

Our sustainably produced steel is the foundation of industrial value creation in Germany.

Efficient production network

SGA4

To remain competitive in the long term, thyssenkrupp Steel is fundamentally modernizing its production capacities. The goal is to align the facilities with future requirements – with greater energy efficiency, increased flexibility, and consistent digitalization of processes. To this end, investments have been made for years in new equipment and technologies at the sites in Duisburg, Bochum, Dortmund, and Andernach. The result: a production network capable of delivering both the high quality and sustainability that customers and society expect.

Climate-neutral production

Plant located on the Rhine

A central pillar of the industrial strategy is the transition to climate-neutral steel production. With the tkH2Steel® program, thyssenkrupp Steel has begun the transformation of its pig iron production – moving away from the coal-based blast furnace route toward hydrogen-based direct reduction. Production is expected to be climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. The company’s transformation is also an investment in this region: it creates new job profiles, drives skill development, and ensures that Europe’s largest steel production hub remains a strong industrial hub.

An overview of our investments

thyssenkrupp Steel is investing in the modernization and future viability of its production network at all locations. The following projects illustrate how this industrial strategy is being implemented in practice.

Continuous Casting Line 4 & Hot Strip Mill 4 – Duisburg

The new centerpiece of flat steel production is taking shape at the Duisburg site: a combined facility comprising Continuous Casting Line 4 and Hot Strip Mill 4, which brings the existing infrastructure up to the latest technological standards. The state-of-the-art continuous casting line is specifically designed to process feedstock from the planned direct reduction plant, thereby linking conventional production with future climate-neutral production. The directly connected Hot Strip Mill 4 completes the process chain – from liquid steel to finished hot-rolled strip in an integrated, highly efficient production flow.

Continuous Casting Line 3 – Duisburg

Continuous casting line

Since it went into operation in December 2023, the new Continuous Casting Line 3 in Duisburg-Bruckhausen has replaced two aging predecessor lines. The unit delivers significant improvements in quality and efficiency: The third facility of its kind at the site features state-of-the-art measurement and control technology and produces slabs for particularly demanding applications. It has also further strengthened the process chain for premium products – a key component of the industrial strategy.

Walking Beam Furnace – Hot Strip Mill 2, Duisburg

Walking beam furnace 5

A state-of-the-art Walking Beam Furnace has been in operation at the Duisburg Hot Strip Mill 2 since September 2022. Covering an area of 54 meters, the unit brings up to 300 slabs per day to rolling temperature in a uniform and energy-efficient manner. Different heating zones enable variable temperature control, allowing the slabs to be produced with specific material properties. Since the massive steel blocks are carried through the furnace rather than pushed, process-related surface defects can be virtually eliminated.

Walking Beam Furnace – Hot Strip Mill 1, Duisburg

In December 2024, thyssenkrupp Steel modernized a Walking Beam Furnace at Hot Strip Mill 1 at its Duisburg-Bruckhausen site to meet the highest technical standards. The unit particularly improves the quality of electrical steel production – the base material for the energy transition. The more homogeneous temperature distribution across the entire slab length reduces temperature loss in the center of the slab and minimizes so-called rail marks, which are the contact points between the slabs and the support tube system. In addition to the improved quality, the modernized furnace also sets new standards in energy consumption and energy efficiency.

Fully automated Slab Storage Yard – Duisburg

Slab storage yard

To ensure optimal integration between the Continuous Casting Line and the Hot Strip Mill, thyssenkrupp Steel is investing in a fully automated Slab Storage Yard. Its most distinctive feature is an intelligent logistics control system that calculates the distribution of approximately 1.7 million tons of slabs annually in real time and optimizes all crane movements. Some slabs can be used directly from the new continuous casting line while still hot – saving energy. At the 19,200-square-meter storage facility, four fully automated slab cranes ensure greater operational safety, as no personnel are required on the ground.

Double Reversing Stand – Bochum

Double reversing stand

With an investment of around 100 million euros, thyssenkrupp Steel is moving forward with the expansion of its Bochum plant into a center of excellence for electromobility. In October 2022, the cornerstone was laid for a new Double Reversing Stand, which went into operation a year later. The stand produces high-quality, non grain oriented electrical steel strip for highly efficient electric drives. Through a freely controllable number of reversing rolling passes, particularly thin materials between 0.20 and 0.50 millimeters can be produced with high flatness and extremely tight tolerances. In addition, the mill is also used to produce high-strength multiphase steels.

Annealing and Isolating Line – Bochum

With the start of ramp-up in January 2025, the new Annealing and Insulation Line will complete the modernization at the Bochum site. The energy-efficient facility enables the production of electrical steel sheets up to 0.2 millimeters thick with particularly homogeneous mechanical and magnetic properties – specifically designed to meet the requirements of highly efficient motors, such as those used primarily in electric vehicles. Together with the upstream Double-Reversing Mill and a new electrical steel inspection line, the process chain will be supplemented by a finishing mill, which is yet to be commissioned and is scheduled to go into operation in 2027. In the future, the line will be capable of producing up to 200,000 tons of non-grain-oriented electrical steel per year.

Hot-Dip Coating Line 10 – Dortmund

Aerial view of FBA 10

With the Hot-Dip Coating Line 10 (FBA 10), thyssenkrupp Steel has commissioned one of the world’s most modern facilities of its kind at its Dortmund site. In this facility, which is approximately 350 meters long and up to 65 meters high, materials for vehicle interior components and exterior body panels are produced using both proven hot-dip galvanizing and highly innovative zinc-magnesium-based coatings. The thin coating thickness of these coatings makes them material- and cost-efficient. Annual production capacity amounts to up to 600,000 tons of hot-dip galvanized premium steel – the automotive industry in particular benefits from the expanded capacity.

Coating Line 13 – Andernach

VA 13

At its Andernach site, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein has commenced production of specially chrome-plated packaging steel at its new Coating Line 13. The process utilizes an innovative coating technology – Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT®) – which uses chromium(III) instead of the previously standard chromium(VI) in the manufacturing process, thereby fully complying with the requirements of the EU REACH Regulation. The specially chrome-plated packaging steel is used, among other things, for pet food cans, crown corks, and ink cans. The new facility also enables the chrome plating of even wider and thinner sheets.
