In November 2019, we were the first company worldwide to launch a series of tests into the use of injecting hydrogen instead of coal into a working blast furnace.
In the next two years, we are now focusing to analyze and evaluate continuously the furnace's operation, in order to eventually widen the use of hydrogen step by step to all 28 tuyeres of the blast furnace.
On our way towards climate-neutral steel production, we will be able to save up to 20 percent already at this point of the production process in the long run.

Dr. Arnd Köfler, CTO of thyssenkrupp Steel, stressed BDEW congress in Berlin that the steel company will drastically reduce its CO2 emissions in the next three decades.
„To make our production largely climate-neutral by 2050, we focus on the use of hydrogen in steel production and at the same time on the conversion of CO2 emissions into chemical raw materials within the scope of the Carbon2Chem technology. The sufficient supply of regeneratively produced, decarbonized hydrogen is decisive for the transformation of our steel production. This requires considerable entrepreneurial and political efforts and a coordinated hydrogen strategy.“

At “The future of steel”, the Handelsblatt Annual Conference, thyssenkrupp Steel CEO, Andreas Goss, took stock of challenges, climate goals and the industrial future of our country. “We must succeed in unifying the indisputably important climate goals and industrial future of our country. For this we need a social consensus. We know that we must adapt our business model to meet these societal needs. We know, too, that as a steel producer on the way to a carbon-neutral business, we are part of the solution.”

The future of steel will be the overarching theme at the Handelsblatt Annual Conference 2019. Innovators and experts will congregate to discuss the dawning of a new era in steel manufacturing in Düsseldorf, Germany. One of them will be the CTO of thyssenkrupp Steel, Dr. Arnd Köfler.
"We are currently pursuing a transformation strategy to achieve low-carbon emission steelworks. Our goal is to reduce our CO2 emission by up to 80 percent by 2050. We`re open to trying out innovative nem technologies to accomplish this. We have already started working with Carbon2Chem and a new hydrogen plan to develop new standards for sustainable steel production, and are beginning with a long-term, cost-intensive conversion of our production methods. We`re still waiting on politicians to develop a suitable regulatory framework and a concerted hydrogen strategy."

“Climate-neutral CO2? Carbon2Chem will prove that it can be done.”
“We want to use our large-scale research project, Carbon2Chem®, to prove that CO2 can be considered a raw material. A technology center has been specially built at thyssenkrupp Steel’s factory site in Duisburg to trial a first pilot system together with partners from the fields of industry and science. We use the exhaust fumes released during steel production and convert them into basic chemical components. Initially, we want to use the carbon dioxide from steel mill gases to manufacture chemical products such as methanol and ammonia. These chemicals act as the base product for processing into fertilizers, plastics, and synthetic fuels.”

"For us virtual is totally real."
“Virtual and augmented reality make it possible for people – especially our customers – to experience our materials and technologies in a whole new way. We already think of engineering in terms of generating millions of items of data via simulation and calculations, then making these available to our customers. Our current challenge lies in translating these vast quantities of data into new visualization technologies such as VR and AR. We foresee that these visualization tools will enhance everyday work for developers in the future – particularly in terms of technical customer communication – as part of virtual engineering.”

In terms of tolerance, our products fulfill even the strictest demands
“scalur®+Z allows customers to save weight, time, money, and on materials. With a tight thickness tolerance of up to +/- 0.06 mm across the strip length and width, the hot-dip galvanized flat product can be ordered at lower thicknesses, enabling lower weights and more strip per meter. Combining a uniform structure and excellent surface quality, the material is perfect for components that demand stricter tolerances such as stamped parts and profiles. thyssenkrupp Steel has been licensed by the MPA NRW material testing office for use in construction.”
