Markus Grolms to become Human Resources Director at thyssenkrupp Steel
Markus Grolms, Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp AG, is resigning from his position at the end of the Annual General Meeting on January 31, 2020. Grolms is union secretary of IG Metall and has been a member of the Supervisory Board as a union representative since 2009. Following the proposal of IG Metall, the Duisburg local court appointed Jürgen Kerner, Chief Treasurer and Executive Board member of IG Metall in Frankfurt, as a successor of Markus Grolms.
IG Metall has also informed thyssenkrupp AG that it will propose Markus Grolms for the soon to be filled position of Labor Director and Human Resources Director for thyssenkrupp’s steel business. thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG is a montane co-determined company. For this reason the right to propose the role of Labor Director lies with IG Metall. Grolms is expected to assume his new role on April 1, 2020. The change is subject to the approval of the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG.
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Russwurm, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp AG: "Markus Grolms has always been a strong and vocal fighter for the interests of the employees on the Supervisory Board, but also a reliable partner for the development of thyssenkrupp. Proof of this is the fact that in summer 2018 in his role as Vice Chairman he prudently and constructively took over the leadership of the Supervisory Board in a difficult situation. In doing so he has done the company a great service. We are very pleased that Markus Grolms will remain with us for the company. We wish him all the best for his new task".
Russwurm continues: "With Jürgen Kerner, IG Metall has proposed a competent and experienced successor. This is a strong signal. With his industrial experience, Jürgen Kerner is an excellent addition to the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp.
Jürgen Kerner has been a member of the Executive Board since October 2011 and Chief Treasurer of IG Metall since November 2013. Kerner is an information electronics technician by training and responsible for the union's finance, controlling, internal services and IT departments. He is also responsible for coordinating sector policy, which includes the steel industry, and the IG Metall team responsible for Siemens. As a Supervisory Board member, Kerner has already overseen the restructuring of various large German corporations.
