The first step towards a career at Steel

Women in the steel industry
From the first apprentices to our commitment to female empowerment
“Women in the steelworks? That's not possible!” - Just a few decades ago, the idea of women working in the steel industry was unthinkable for many. But on September 1, 1978, the first girls started their training with us. They wanted to prove that they were just as good at the workbench and lathe as their male colleagues - and had to assert themselves in an industry dominated by men.
Right from the start, the young women fought against the cliché that they were taking up “male professions”. For them, it was a conscious decision to become a lathe operator, a telecommunications fitter or a measurement and control mechanic. A lot has changed since then: Today, women are represented in production, in the laboratory, in technology and in management positions. Nevertheless, the steel industry remains a male domain and there are still hurdles that make it difficult for women to enter. Above all, there is a lack of visible female role models in technical professions to encourage girls to take this path.
Our colleague Dr. Alexandra Hirsch, Team Coordinator for Technology Ore and Iron, shows - like many others - how it can be done. She proves every day that women are successful in the steel industry. You can read our interview with her here.
If you would like to know how this change began, you can find the original article from our company newspaper from back then here - an exciting look back at the first women in training.

Diverse entry opportunities for women in the steel industry
We want to make it easier for women to enter the steel industry and offer numerous entry opportunities - not just through traditional apprenticeships. Whether as a working student during your studies or as a trainee after graduation - we create various ways to open up long-term career prospects for women.
Female empowerment: we are committed to change
With our commitment to female empowerment, we want to get more girls and women interested in technical professions, show them real career opportunities and create the right conditions for them to develop their full potential.
We know that this is a long road. But one thing has already become clear in 1978: Women in the steel industry? It is very possible. And we are doing everything we can to ensure that it becomes even more of a matter of course in the future.
